The Mariinsky Palace, built between 1839 and 1844, was originally conceived as a wedding gift from Emperor Nicholas I to his daughter Maria. The palace became the home of the Grand Duchess and her husband, Maximilian, Duke of Leuchtenberg, and quickly turned into a center of high society life.
Later, the palace housed the State Council, and after the Revolution of 1917 it was occupied by various institutions. During the Great Patriotic War, it was the headquarters of the People's Militia and a hospital.
